chapter 2 Culturally responsive classroom was quite an eye opener. It scares me to think that I would offend one of my students, by not being sensitive to their culture and this could in turn, have that student learn less than they would if I had been more sensitive the culture. I think that it is important to be culturally responsible without going overboard. I like the idea of home visits or even a meeting with parents/caregivers before school has started so that you can mess tighter a learning environment that is inviting the first day of school.

  1. I hope you always have the same disposition on offending a student's culture because it is very important for a teacher to always treat all her students with respect and dignity. You will go far with that mindset!

  2. The book you highlighted seems like a great read. It also looks like the book could be tied into other subjects like history or social studies.

It's great when you can tie in literature to create meaning in other subjects.

    Thanks for the great find!

  3. Funny thing you mentioned offending students. I had a teacher in high school that really did not like white people. He openly criticized them all the time in his class. He often criticized me for fun. I was the only white person in this class with around 30 to 35 hispanic students and one black student. It was an experience I never forgot.

  5. I really like the book A Broken Flute. I too believe that our heritage should saved, passed on , and represtented correctly. If I remember correctly there is an organization in San Antonio that has been preserving it or at least trying to. As part of one of my classes in P.A.C. I and my classmates had to do hours in that organization. To learn about our heritage as Hispanics, and how it was being saved and passed on to future generations. Thanks for sharing this book.
